The Experience of Writing and the Life of the Archive: Emerging Literacy in the Colonial Andes
Abstract: My dissertation explores the material processes and archival accumulation through which writing in Quechua emerged in colonial Peru, underlining the roles of native speakers in this social formation. The dissertation provides an analysis of the relationship of the Quechua language family and its speakers with the production and circulation of texts in the format of manuscripts and books. The purpose of this analysis is to reflect on the commodification and geopolitical infrastructures that impact the circulation of written sources in Quechua, their accessibility to scholars and native speakers, and their use as a source for the production of knowledge about Andean culture, society, language and history. To this end, I develop a theoretical framework to reflect on the production and fragmentation of agency in relation to archivization and materiality in order to look at forms of biopower involved in the development of literacy in the past and present. This framework facilitates the dissertation’s analyses of colonial writing, its circulation, and its use in contemporary scholarship. Reflecting on these analyses, I argue that socio-political processes, religious ideologies, and reading and writing practices in the colonial Andes combined in a way that has led to the fragmentation and anonymization of Quechua speaker’s presence and agency in the archive to which they made seminal contributions as authors, scribes, and informants. These observations lead to a critique of the notions of authorship and authority and take me to problematize the use of these texts in reconstructing historical facts about the pre-colonial Andes. In conclusion, the goal of this dissertation is to investigate the impact on the present of the development of a moral and ethical separation and dislocation of native speakers from cultures that did not practice alphabetic writing as a technique for historical recording. By looking at archival practices involved in the access of manuscripts and the performative aspect of colonial Andean books I seek to ground the relationship between Quechua speakers and the material aspects of writing that created their categorization as native speakers. ; PHD ; Romance Languages & Literatures: Spanish ; University of Michigan, Horace H.
